Southern Oregon PBS
Southern Oregon PBS is the PBS member network for southern Oregon and northern California, broadcasting on KSYS in Medford and KFTS in Klamath Falls. It is licensed to Southern Oregon Public Television, Inc., a nonprofit.
Southern Oregon PBS (SOPBS), formerly Southern Oregon Public Television (SOPTV), is the collective brand for two PBS member television stations: KSYS (channel 8) in Medford and KFTS (channel 22) in Klamath Falls. The stations are licensed to Southern Oregon Public Television, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, and operate from studios on South Fir Street in downtown Medford.
SOPBS serves Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine and Klamath counties in Oregon and Modoc and Siskiyou counties in California. KSYS transmits from King Mountain, and KFTS, a full-time satellite of KSYS for the Klamath Falls area, from Stukel Mountain, with translators relaying the signal to communities such as Brookings, Cave Junction, Grants Pass, Phoenix and Shady Cove. Alongside its main PBS channel, the network carries the SOPBS World, Create and Kids services.
KSYS signed on January 17, 1977, after a new nonprofit, the Southern Oregon Educational Company (later renamed Southern Oregon Public Television, Inc.), bought the channel 8 construction permit with help from the owners of the region's two commercial stations. KFTS followed in January 1989. The organization adopted the Southern Oregon PBS name and brand on January 1, 2020, to align more closely with the PBS national brand. It describes its purpose as connecting the community with quality local and national programming that educates, enlightens, inspires and entertains.
Southern Oregon PBS hires for broadcast engineering, master control and media asset coordination, marketing and communications, membership and relationship management, and production. It also offers unpaid internships for academic credit in pledge production, video graphics, marketing and communications, and associate producing.
