PBS KVIE is the community-licensed PBS member station for the Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto region, on the air since 1959. It produces America's Heartland and local series, and runs Abridged, a nonprofit local news service for greater Sacramento.
PBS KVIE (channel 6) is the PBS member television station for the Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto market, which the station describes as the nation's 20th largest television market. It is owned by KVIE, Inc., a community-based nonprofit organization, and has been on the air since February 23, 1959. Its studios are on West El Camino Avenue in the Natomas district of Sacramento, and its transmitter is in Walnut Grove. The call letters stand for "Valley Information and Education" and contain VI, the Roman numeral for 6.
The station's mission is to inspire people to explore the world and connect with their community through the integrity of public media. Alongside PBS programs such as Antiques Roadshow, NOVA, Nature, FRONTLINE and PBS KIDS, KVIE produces America's Heartland, a national series on agriculture, and local programs including KVIE Arts Showcase, Studio Sacramento, Rob on the Road, Inside California Education and the ViewFinder documentary series. Viewers can also watch through KVIE Passport and the PBS app.
In September 2025 KVIE launched Abridged, a nonprofit, nonpartisan local news service for the Sacramento region, with a website, morning newsletters and a news roundup that airs on KVIE. Abridged covers Sacramento, Yolo, Placer and El Dorado counties, with reporters assigned to beats such as the state Capitol, Placer County and Sacramento city and county government.
KVIE hires for news and editorial roles at Abridged (reporters, editors and a sports editor), marketing and membership, leadership giving and fundraising, community engagement and events, finance and accounting, production and broadcast operations, and technology. The station lists medical, dental and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, a wellness reimbursement program and training opportunities among its benefits.
