KSER 90.7 is an independent, listener- and volunteer-driven community public radio station in Everett, Washington, run by the nonprofit KSER Foundation and serving Snohomish County, Whidbey and Camano Islands and the North Puget Sound with 89.9 KXIR.
KSER 90.7 is a community public radio station licensed to Everett, Washington, owned and operated by the nonprofit KSER Foundation. It is the only full-power public radio station licensed in Snohomish County. Together with its sister signal, 89.9 KXIR in Freeland on Whidbey Island, it serves Everett, Snohomish County, Whidbey and Camano Islands and the North Puget Sound, and it streams worldwide at kser.org.
KSER first went on the air on February 9, 1991, from a small studio in Lynnwood. It grew out of the Jack Straw Memorial Foundation, the organization behind Seattle's listener-supported station KRAB, and the KSER Foundation has owned it since 1994. A new transmitter in western Lake Stevens raised the signal to 5,800 watts in 1997, the station moved into its studios on Wetmore Avenue in downtown Everett in 2004, and KXIR signed on in 2013.
The station's mission is to enrich its community through local, independent public radio and other services dedicated to arts, education, ideas and civic engagement. Its schedule pairs morning and afternoon news and public affairs blocks, including Democracy Now! and local public affairs programs, with locally curated music shows that range across blues, soul, reggae, world music, jazz, rock and roots.
KSER is listener and volunteer driven: more than half of its operating budget comes directly from listeners, and most of its hosts are volunteers. A small paid staff, led by a general manager and a program director, works with a board of directors and a volunteer corps that numbered more than 100 in 2014. Past staff openings have included the general manager and membership and online engagement roles, and the station also recruits volunteers for on-air hosting, membership drives, community events, the music library and board service.
