All Classical Radio is an independent, community-funded classical music radio station and multimedia organization in Portland, Oregon. It has broadcast classical music on 89.9 FM since 1983 and is owned by All Classical Public Media, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3). Its studios are in the Media Arts Center at KOIN Tower in downtown Portland, which opened in December 2024.
The flagship station, KQAC 89.9 FM, covers the Portland and Vancouver area. A network of repeater stations and translators, including KQOC 88.1 FM in Gleneden Beach, KQMI 88.9 FM in Manzanita and KQHR in Hood River, carries the signal from the Columbia River Gorge to the Oregon Coast and from the Willamette Valley to Vancouver, Washington. The station serves nearly 250,000 local listeners each week and streams to listeners in more than 100 countries. Most of its funding comes from individual listeners, regional businesses and foundations.
Beyond its main service, All Classical Radio runs the International Children's Arts Network (ICAN), an HD Radio, streaming and app channel for children, families, caregivers and educators launched in 2019; an Artists in Residence program; and the Recording Inclusivity Initiative, which records works by composers historically underrepresented in classical music. Locally produced programs include the live performance series Thursdays @ Three, Played in Oregon, Club Mod and Northwest Previews. The station traces its roots to KBPS, launched by Benson Polytechnic High School students in 1923, and became an independent nonprofit station in 2003.
Its staff work in music and programming, on-air hosting and production, digital content, corporate support and underwriting, development and membership, marketing, events and venue management, engineering and operations. On-air host and producer roles are union positions represented by IBEW Local 48, and the station runs a paid internship program for college students and recent graduates.
